Emma Horwood
Emma is a music graduate from the Elder Conservatorium at the University of Adelaide, completing a B.Mus and Grad.Dip Ed. In addition to studying harp and voice she took conducting classes with Carl Crossin.
Emma is delighted to be starting as musical director with Corinthian Singers in 2010, bringing her extensive solo and ensemble performing experience and a passion for choral music to the role. Emma currently conducts Bella Voce, the women’s choir at the Conservatorium at the University of Adelaide, with whom she has worked since 2006. She also directed the Chandos Chorale in 2003 and 2004, was tutor for the Australian Girls Choir from 2000–2008 (conducting their top choir, the Performing Choir from 2007) and was director of women’s a cappella group Galline from 2005–2008.
A leading soprano soloist and ensemble singer in Adelaide, Emma is a member of Adelaide Chamber Singers, touring most recently with them to Canada, the US and UK in 2006 and performing with them as soloist in the 2008 and 2010 Adelaide Festivals. As a member of female vocal trio Eve she has performed live on ABC Classic FM and currently presents concerts as part of the Musica Viva in Schools programme. With vocal ensemble Syntony she has performed in the Barossa, Coriole and Adelaide Fringe Festivals, in addition to their annual concert series.
Emma presents frequent solo recitals, including a residency for The Firm in 2005 and in the Ngeringa Herb Farm, Elder Lunchhour and Urrbrae House concert series. Her collaborations include performances with David Elton (trumpet), Jamie Cock (piano) and Aleksandr Tsiboulski (guitar) with whom she has won critical acclaim and recorded CDs. Emma was featured on ABC Classic FM’s Rising Stars programme in 2006, was vocal soloist in the State Theatre’s This Uncharted Hour in 2007, and sang the role of Belinda in Dido and Aeneas opposite Sally-Anne Russell at Coriole Festival in 2007. In 2008 she was chosen to perform Brahms’ Liebslieder Waltzes with renowned UK pianist Malcolm Martineau for the Accompanist Guild of South Australia. She has recorded three solo CDs: Night Dreams, Vox Angelica and Songs of Life and Love, which have all featured on ABC Classic FM, and several ensemble CDs.
An experienced performer in the highly specialised art of accompanying her own singing, Emma performs regularly as harpist and vocalist at weddings, functions, recitals and festivals, including performances on stage at the Bundaleer Forest Weekend in 2007 and 2009, at Kaffe Abend in Tanunda in 2009, and as soloist for the Proms concerts in 2010. She also teaches harp and voice privately.
